Description “With the goal of promoting new and innovative discoveries to solve challenges or needs, the School of Engineering & Applied Science created the Discovery Competition in 2012. This special opportunity provides engineering undergraduate students the forum to explore their entrepreneurial interests with support from mentors, to use their creativity to develop solutions for real-world problems and to compete for financial resources that could help turn their ideas into businesses.”Website: https://engineering.wustl.edu/disc-comp.aspx
Requirements Team must have at least one engineering and one non-engineering student. Team members can be added at any time with permission of competition director.
Funding For teams that make it past early rounds, funding is awarded for prototype development by submitting a budget to the competition.$25,000 was split between the 1st and 2nd Place teams in the 2013-2014 competition. The 3rd and 4th Place teams were awarded $7,500 and $5,000 in cash, respectively. 1st through 4th Place teams also received $2,500 in legal advising services each.
Timeline Registration was required by September 15, 2013. There are several mandatory presentations throughout the school year, with dates being announced 1-2 weeks in advance. Final presentations for the 2013-2014 competition took place during Reading Week.
